I've been in a fandom that's been closed for over 40 years (the 2004 movie is a canon unto itself as far as I'm concerned) and it hasn't stopped me from enjoying myself. It's far more interesting to delve into what wasn't said, and wasn't done, and what could have been done differently.
I also have the advantage of not having a huge amount of background info available - which today's shows tend to develop.
