Well, I could spend tons of words groveling about having waited so long to do this, or I could get to the report! Guess which we'd all rather I do? I'm combining Jewel's Saturday and Sunday panels into this post, mostly chronologically, so some SGA and Firefly bits are mixed in with each other, though when possible I tried to group the subjects. I have video for Sunday but not Saturday, so images from Sunday are mixed in, not that it makes a lot of difference get to the recap, Darsy, OMG. NOTE: NO SPOILERS.

SATURDAY:
When they switched the room from David and Kate's stools to the armchair they set out for Jewel, the look was so different that the first thing she said to us was that it looked like Masterpiece Theater. All of the photos I'm using were provided by [livejournal.com profile] hebrew_hernia (thank you! *mwah*) and the videos are by [livejournal.com profile] grammarwoman (*cuddle*).

When she was asked which project she considers her favorite, she very diplomatically said that she has a "sweet feelings" for Firefly, and that she feels very comfortable on Atlantis, and calls it "home."

The next question was "McKay or Ronon?" Jewel's answer?

"I'm a Sheppard girl." (Asked later in the Q&A about whether she would choose to go to Atlantis if she had the choice, her first reaction was, "Would Sheppard be there?")

She went on to say that there's something "undeniably sexy" about John Sheppard, and our corner of fangirls certainly agreed with her wholeheartedly! To answer the question (again, diplomatically), she said that there's a certain physical chemistry that Keller has with Ronon, but that she's intellectually attracted to McKay. She didn't choose per se, but she did say that Keller is more of an intellectual girl.

When she was asked the inevitable SGA love triangle question--"Who kisses better, Jason or David?" Jewel said the question wasn't quite fair because she and Jason never had any "lip on lip action" (though in the commentary for Quarantine, it was implied that they did takes with kisses and without. However, a lot of times the things said in commentaries are easily refuted...), but Jason does "smell really good." Then she said that during that scene in Last Man where the AU Keller and McKay kiss, she and David goofed around and it ended up being really weird, to kiss. However, Jewel did say that David is "a really lovely kisser."

Harking back to David's remark that he and Jewel are like Statler and Waldorf, and someone brought it up in a question. Jewel said that she and David act like they're ten years old on set ("we act like idiots!"), and they goof off a lot, like they have their own language.

There was a question about accents, and she expressed happiness that they gave Jennifer Keller the background of having been from Wisconsin (because though that's a US state, the accent there is similar to a Canadian accent). She went through a few of the words she says that some of them try to deliberately say more 'American,' but to me it still just sounded like a Canadian accent. Sheepishly, Jewel admitted she does actually say 'eh' sometimes. There was an awkward moment here where a man was asking her a question and referenced one of the Canadian channels that something she'd been in had aired, and he actually said he watched the CDC because of the "good free porn." The way he said it sounded like he said 'When I think of Jewel, I think of porn!' (Jewel and I both say, 'Okay then!')

The next question was "Do you ever talk about work with Summer Glau?" Jewel says that they don't really talk about work, though all her Firefly costars TIVO each other's shows. She thinks of Summer as a "sweet ballerina" and is completely blown away but her performance in Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles. Summer plays an "ass-kicking terminator" in it.

In the Q&A on Sunday, Jewel told us that when they screwed up on Firefly, they always blamed it on Summer--because Summer never messed up. "She likes it, I think," Jewel joked. Apparently they even do it when they're mad, just saying, "Summer!" in an exasperated tone.

I don't remember the question, but Jewel said she started acting when she was very young, at like five years old, and when she was twelve she wanted to do normal kid stuff. Jewel got into a fight with her mom along the lines of "I don't want to be on the X-Files, I want to go to my friend's sleepover party!" In the end, though, she says she's "really grateful" that her mom didn't listen, because she has had experiences that most people her age never had.

When she was asked why she thought Firefly got cancelled, she said immediately that she didn't think the network understood the show at all. A few quotes she gave as coming from the network were, "The show is too gloomy;" "Mal is a jerk;" "Needs more sex!" At that, Jewel shook her head and said, "so, off went Morena's dress!" Because the network didn't like the pilot, the show's creators basically had to write an alternate first show in a day, and when the show aired, they aired all of the episodes out of order, which contributed to the mess. Their treatment by the network was really uncomfortable, Jewel said--the network usually throws an 'about-to-air' party for new shows, but Firefly didn't get one. In the end, she says they "weren't surprised," but they were very disappointed.

My next few pages of notes are about the infamous "Finger Story," but thanks to the brilliant [livejournal.com profile] grammarwoman and her camera of Awesome renovated room, we have VIDEO! There are a few seconds missing in the middle as the three minute video limit cut off twice, but luckily they weren't in crucial storytelling areas. Apparently Nathan's on-set shenanigans weren't limited to this particular joke; Jewel said that he was always trying to get the laugh out of her, as evidenced by Serenity's blooper reel.

The next question (oh man, to have to follow that!) actually fit in perfectly with the story, because Jewel was asked what her favorite moment associated with Firefly was, and she said that when the cast went to the Firefly panel at Comic Con that first year, they had no idea that the show had such popularity. They walked in and got a standing ovation from the five thousand people in the auditorium. Even all these years later, talking about that makes her a little emotional, which was really sweet to witness.

Next, Jewel talked about working with David on Trio, and how she and Amanda "laughed themselves silly" when he attempted to do his own stunt for one of the scenes. He was meant to leap sideways out of the way of something onto a mat, but instead of that, David ended up with no lateral movement at all and missed the mat. This misses a lot in translation (her description was hilarious)!

When asked what was the most difficult about Firefly having been cancelled, she said that the worst was that they had no closure. They were told by Joss that the show was cancelled while they were shooting an episode, and basically that was it. Joss was (understandably) pissed, and Sean Maher, who played Jewel's character Kaylee's love interest, told her, "Are you kidding me? We never got to kiss!"

She was asked whether she has anything from the Firefly set, and she told us she has the engine room hammock and the 'Kaylee's Room' door sign. Then, in that wonderfully deadpan way she has, she told us that Nathan took everything else. "He showed up on set with a cardboard box and ripped stuff off the wall," Jewel said. He took a "whole stack of Alliance cash" and she pointed out "that's not real, you know." Jewel joked that Nathan has so much from the set that "I think he secretly plays Firefly at home," and asks himself "What would Malcolm Reynolds do?" Apparently Nathan tried to take the head of the Jayne statue but Adam, who played Jayne, told Nathan "Don't you touch that!" He's apparently very possessive about the head, and when the subject came up later in the Q&A, Jewel joked that Nathan probably took the body, along with everything else.

Nathan plays episodes of Firefly at parties on mute for 'atmosphere.' Jewel says he's "like my brother, but he's a crazy person!" (Alan Tudyk is also a crazy person, apparently) The next person asked Jewel what her response was to the 'Browncoat' stuff--and she said she was shocked and gratified by it. Also that thanks to the fans, they got to film Serenity and that being able to do that offered a lot of closure that everyone needed, which wouldn't be possible without the fans. Jewel also told us that Joss would love to do another movie, but he "wants us to be older before another sequel."

For the Chinese they used in Firefly, Jewel says they each got a cassette tape with the words spoken phonetically for them to learn them--but their scripts had the swear words in English, so they could know what they were saying. Someone remarked that Jewel has chosen quite a few roles in Science Fiction, adding that she's drawn to special characters, and that it's been mostly coincidence, but she said that "sci fi has been good to me" (meaning the genre, I imagine). Jewel said that Kaylee interested her because "she seemed to be a contradiction--so sexually assured, confident; a girly girl who loved machines. Someone who could wear a dress and lipstick while she's fixing an engine."

Asked about how she felt about gaining weight to play Kaylee, Jewel said she hates exercise, and when Joss told her he'd like her to put on some weight for the role, they didn't have a target. She just "ate [her] ass on," gaining twenty pounds in three weeks! Talking about what she ate, she said she'd have pasta with cream sauce for breakfast, and would just consistently eat throughout the day. She also said that craft services (the food folks on set) used to always have a plate of donuts for her to munch on in between takes. (As you can see, she may not like exercise, but...)

Jewel says it's important to her to portray Dr. Keller as a real person, reacting "how a normal person would act." She says Keller has a desire to prove something to herself, and that in Missing, she was very much a "city girl in the woods." As the character has developed in the show, Jewel says she sees Keller "get more self assured, taking risks," and most of all, getting to inject some humor into her performance. Because the writers are more comfortable with the character and the way Jewel plays her, she says they're becoming more comfortable writing Keller for Jewel.

Incidentally, Jewel says that Paul McGillion is like a best friend to her, and that she has enjoyed getting to work with him. She was asked about whether she tended to miss anything about Canada when she was away, and she mentioned Tim Horton's, though she did say she likes American food. Then Jewel did an unconsciously funny bit where she said she missed her dog--and her husband. After some gentle teasing from the audience, she protested "--but the dog is really cute!" and then assured us that she thinks her husband is, too.

SUNDAY
The subject of Jewel's earlier work came up, and she was asked about working with Lynda Carter. Jewel joked that her dad "showed up (on set) a lot" during that time (she was 8), and that she can remember seeing the inside of Lynda's trailer and being impressed that she had wallpaper. Jewel decided that she would know she'd made it (her words were "a big star") when she had wallpaper on her trailer walls--and she does, on Atlantis.

As a follow-up to her statements the previous day about being a 'Sheppard girl,' someone asked Jewel how she liked working with Joe Flanigan. I have the video here (sorry, Jewel! *hides*)

You know what? I am taking it down. Because, I forget sometimes that the actors are real people, and that not everyone is as web-knowledgeable and savvy as David Hewlett is. Jewel wasn't being cute about asking us not to put the video up, she was just wanting to be herself. And I respect the ever-living hell out of that. Basically, the pertinent part to SGA of the question she was asked is that she sees Joe as an older brother type, but has a crush on Sheppard.

At a question about the wardrobe for Firefly asking which her favorite outfit was turned easily to a discussion of The Dress in Shindig (image from still-flying.net). Jewel says the dress was really complicated to put on, and it made many things difficult, especially going to the bathroom. She had a hoop hooked to the fabric that needed to be taken off every time, and to get it off without flashing the entire crew was... difficult. Morena helped her--"it got really intimate, that episode"--and she says every time she squeezed into the tiny stall and held the dress up to go, she worried that she'd end up getting it dirty. "By the fourth day, it got peed on a little bit," Jewel confessed.

In SGA season five, Jewel says that Keller gets to be quirkier, and that she particularly enjoyed the "funny scenes with McKay." She skirted questions that might have revealed spoilers, saying that she'd like for Teyla to "teach her with the sticks" but added that she "can't comment on that" when someone tried to press her.

Much to our delight, Jewel elaborated on the stir-craziness she'd mentioned on Saturday during the filming of Trio with David Hewlett and Amanda Tapping. She says they got "punchy" and they ended up coming up with an idea for "Stargate Titanic the Musical" (which didn't get explained but I'm assuming the 'Titanic' was a sardonic Hewlettism on how well received it would have been), that David then took and ran with, writing up mock-up songs!

When asked about Amanda later on in the Q&A, Jewel said she called Amanda "the Tappinator," and said that she's just "badass." "The crew adores her, she doesn't take herself seriously," Jewel said, adding that sometimes she'd (Jewel) be laughing so hard at the antics that she'd ruin her mascara.

Speaking of mascara (you're all going '...???'), someone asked her which role she most regretted, and Jewel mostly demurred, stating that she didn't really have many regrets except for a small role she took in Dead Like Me (she's credited as 'Goth Girl'). Her philosophy on taking the role, Jewel says, had been essentially to say, "oh, why not?" and she describes the role as "a lot of sexy time in a goth outfit." She says she can't watch it.

The airport in Baltimore lost her luggage (which apparently happens to Jewel a lot), and she told us she loves to shop and "needs high heels like air." After telling us she "can shop like nobody's business," the question came up again later in the Q&A (okay, fess up, who got in line directly after she said that!) asking her (and I'm paraphrasing) what she'd buy if she shopped for David Hewlett...

There was short but really cute bit of business (that I'm conglomerating together into something probably unrecognizable) after being asked what shows she would want to star on if she could (as well as asking her what her favorite shows are). Immediately, Jewel mentioned Lost as a favorite show, and said that her favorite character is Jack ('Jack and Juliette? Jack and Kate?' "Jack and ME," Jewel retorted). He's "bossy, sensitive, and melodramatic--I like that in a man," Jewel said. She added that she loves Heroes ("Don't spoil me!"), Battlestar Galactica, and is really looking forward to Dollhouse (Joss's new show slated to air in 2009, hopefully, fronting Eliza Dushku).

Someone asked about the Firefly comic book series, and Jewel said, "If you were on a comic wouldn't YOU buy it?"

She brought up Adam's antics on set, saying how she liked to make fun of him especially because he was obsessed with props, and was always asking Joss if he could be doing something in the background; "How about I stand here licking a knife?" Jewel says he decided that Jayne was in love with Inara, and was determined to play scenes as if this were really the case, even though Joss would try to curtail that if he caught it.

When asked who came up with the infamous line, "I'll be in my bunk," Jewel said it was Joss--and as a follow-up, she was asked what her favorite Kaylee lines were. She did the accent (and how fabulous is it to see someone slide into a character like that? Whee!) as she said, "I ain't had nothin' twixt my nethers goin' on a year now, weren't run on batteries!" (note: yes, paraphrased, but it's Jewel, and it was her line, and she can do that, heh) She also said she loved the "You ever sail in a Firefly?" line (UMBRELLA).

I don't have written here how it came up, but I think someone asked her if she'd like to have any of her Firefly co-stars guest on Atlantis, and immediately she thought of Nathan as a 'Travelers' type of pilot ("because he's always gotta be the captain, right?") and Adam as maybe "one of Michael's badass hybrids." "I just want to put my friends in prosthetics!"

I think my favorite part, though, was the running joke on the SGA set that the water there makes you pregnant. I cut together Jewel's comment from the earlier video with some elaboration she gave later in the Q&A and it's here, for your amusement...

You thought I forgot all about the nickname, didn't you? Well, unfortunately, we didn't get Jewel and David on stage together singing a rousing chorus of... whatever, from their antics in Trio, but she did end up telling us David's nickname (guessing, no doubt, that there was no way David would sing to us, no matter what--and she was right): it's "Bing Bing." She also calls Joe "Flannie;" David referred to Joe as that in his and Kate's Q&A, so it appears to have caught on!

Little question, btw--is there a place to post recaps to other than just my journal and [livejournal.com profile] on_shore_leave? I'm sure there are Jewel Staite fans who would love to read this, but I don't know if I have the right to go posting in [livejournal.com profile] sga_noticeboard or something.
