*waves* HAI! Have some random updates by me! BTW, sorry I didn't respond to comments on the last entry... it's been a hectic week.

==> ...I just went looking through my contacts on the phone, and I have one listed just as 'China.' I suspect it's China Garden, but I have to laugh, because having forgotten completely that I had any food places in my phone made it even funnier when I scrolled down to see 'India,' a little further.

==> I'm curious as to what the people on my flist think about new regulations that require birthdate and gender along with names, now:
Secure Flight requires that airlines get your birthdate and gender so you can be prescreened agasinst (sp) a government watch list.

I mean... how likely is it that cheap-ass companies like Jet Blue will be understanding to genderqueer and transitioning people? If you're in the process of transitioning, and your driver's license states a different gender, will they consider it a mis-match when you check in for your flight? G says that, if you identify as neither, then that's what you should put... but the likelihood that there'll be a 'Male,' 'Female,' or 'Neither' drop-down is almost NIL, in my opinion. :\ HOWEVER: Why I love Obama, #1438948249328, btw. (that's a PDF, fyi) For those like me that tend to hate .pdfs (Gosh, I'm glad I chose to load this one, though):

Issue

The Proposed Rule and Regulations drafted by the Transportation Security Administration (“TSA”) as part of the Secure Flight Program (“SFP”), which require that airlines request gender data of all passengers when making a reservation in order to determine whether the passenger is on a federal “watch list,” would subject transgender passengers to enhanced scrutiny in the screening process, civil and criminal sanctions for fraudulent misrepresentation, and embarrassing invasions of personal and medical privacy.

Short Answer

TSA should amend Proposed Regulation 49 C.F.R. § 1560.3 in its Final Rule by changing the definition of “Passport Information” and “Secure Flight Passenger Data” to delete “gender” from the required data that airline operators must request of passengers. If the Proposed Rule and Regulations are approved as currently drafted, TSA should issue a new Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) that would amend 49 C.F.R. § 1560.3 by deleting “gender” from the required data that must be requested from passengers. If TSA declines to issue a NPRM, then TSA should issue guidance on several Regulations that would protect transgender travelers from bias.

==> I have some questions about characterization and warnings in fic that I'd like to talk over with a few of you--specifically, if in a fic, it appears as though someone important has died but they aren't actually dead, do you warn for that? Because, I mean... if the character appears to be dead, a lot of people back-button and never know it wasn't real.

==>I've been getting B12 shots this week as I have a vitamin deficiency of B12. Apparently the USA has a really low threshhold for what is 'normal' with B12 anyway, and I'm already deficient in it... so let's hope this helps with cognition and energy!

==> OH GODDAMNIT, SGU. I mean, seriously, I wanted to like you despite everything. And I still might, but just feel really fucking dirty about it, now.

==> Linking this public apology by [livejournal.com profile] icarusancalion for many reasons, not the least of which because I hope that if I'm ever in a position to make such an apology, I would be this thorough and honest about it.

OOH incentive time! I have tests galore due this weekend online and I have class from 8 AM - 5 PM all day both Saturday and Sunday (and, oh god, the campus they're held at is an hour away AND I can't be late so yay for leaving at 6:30 AM probably), so I'll answer these every time I take a well-deserved break from test studying! ♥ If you're not sure I follow the fandom in question, ask anyway :) I haven't needed to tag every fandom I've dabbled/watched stuff from yet.

Name a fandom, and I'll tell you my:

One True Pairing Ship
Canon Ship
"If this happens I'll stab my eyes out with a spork" Ship
"You are one sick bastard" Ship
"I dabble a little" Ship
"It's like a car crash" Ship
"Tickles my fancy but not sold just yet" Ship
"Makes no canon sense but why the Hell not" Ship
"Everyone else loves it but I just don't feel it" Ship

ETA: I haven't forgotten this post, I just have a very intensive weekend course going on right now and posting here is a luxury I can't afford tonight! Maybe tomorrow :)
As seen on [livejournal.com profile] sondarita and [livejournal.com profile] gaffsie's journals (possibly others, I haven't gotten through all the posts made since I went to school this morning!

Isn't it a joy to see a company like Hallmark showing some spine?

It seems the American Family Association (AFA) has up an online form to send Hallmark hate mail for making same sex marriage greeting cards. What a shame it would be if people used it to send Hallmark support mail instead...

Takes a second and is easy to do. Please forward it along...

Automated! Convenient! FUNNY.

Go and foil, before they get smart and figure it out. (Ed. because that'll never happen.)

I for one, sent a letter of support.

Here's what I put in my letter... )

ETA: As I suspected, their asking for e-mails places you on a preliminary mailing list. The good news is, you have to confirm via the e-mail sent that you wish to continue receiving mail. Plop it in the trash and keep on trucking, imo.

ETA2: Dear LJ,
Stop giving me "This comment has been deleted; you cannot reply to it." responses to my trying to edit MY OWN comment on MY OWN FUCKING LJ. It's NOT deleted, no one has that power but ME. Yay for fudged-up code.
I think I'm allergic to negativity, or something, because every time I come across it, I end up getting stuck on this song, instead (or, I wish I did. One of the two):

Oh Beaker. You make it all better.

You know what else makes it better? Rodney McKay in a suit. (Vague, oh, so vague season five guest star casting spoilers) )
Well, I could spend tons of words groveling about having waited so long to do this, or I could get to the report! Guess which we'd all rather I do? I'm combining Jewel's Saturday and Sunday panels into this post, mostly chronologically, so some SGA and Firefly bits are mixed in with each other, though when possible I tried to group the subjects. I have video for Sunday but not Saturday, so images from Sunday are mixed in, not that it makes a lot of difference get to the recap, Darsy, OMG. NOTE: NO SPOILERS.

SATURDAY:
When they switched the room from David and Kate's stools to the armchair they set out for Jewel, the look was so different that the first thing she said to us was that it looked like Masterpiece Theater. All of the photos I'm using were provided by [livejournal.com profile] hebrew_hernia (thank you! *mwah*) and the videos are by [livejournal.com profile] grammarwoman (*cuddle*).

Jewel was first asked which of the projects she's worked on would she consider her favorite... )

Little question, btw--is there a place to post recaps to other than just my journal and [livejournal.com profile] on_shore_leave? I'm sure there are Jewel Staite fans who would love to read this, but I don't know if I have the right to go posting in [livejournal.com profile] sga_noticeboard or something.
FanLib is Shutting Down.

ETA2: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth, a link to Firefox News about FanLib's incipient demise.

Interestingly enough, I'd navigated there just now after a few days' worth of prevaricating to delete my account. I've been increasingly frustrated with the reception (or total lack thereof, even in the critique group on the forums, where most of us at least made an effort to read outside our comfort zones) the site has for slash. There was no category for slash initially, but there's been a category for 'gay/lesbian' since I first went there a year ago. I wholeheartedly agree with the forum thread I found discussing this: that most authors would not categorize slash fiction under 'gay/lesbian' in deference to the difference between writing characters gay and lesbian, and writing gay and lesbian characters. Even still, it took a very long time for the 'slash' category to be added, and by then, most people had chosen more specific genres (you're limited to one genre; everything else is tags) like angst or humor.

I was prepared to feel at least a little sorry for them, but perusing the forums again has netted NO INFORMATION WHATSOEVER about this decision. I don't visit the site anywhere near as often as I used to (the forums were fun and interactive, a small community that I did enjoy, no matter the site's reputation), so I don't know what happened, but given their complete and utter disregard for the users (hmm, did we not make enough money for you? TOO BAD) in regards to what's going on, I have absolutely no sympathy whatsoever.

I've deleted my account there, mostly because given the lack of communication as to why they've made this decision (besides a rather generic "It's been a real privilege and a lot of fun and we are truly sorry that we are unable to continue), and I wanted to be the one who deletes my stuff rather than trust that it'll be deleted when the site goes off-line.

In short? Way to fizzle. Way to claim to be user-oriented and turn out to be (surprise, surprise), lying, just like everyone else thought you were. Don't let the internet hit your asses on your way out, FanLib.

ETA: On a related note, I really wish LJ would add some sort of 'last message' that displays when you navigate to a deleted journal. So many people delete for a few days or a week, and there's NO WAY TO FIND OUT WHY, unless you're on that person's flist. Which yes, none of my business, probably, but I still worry about people.

Also, YAY for a non broken keyboard.
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] argosy's recent post, I have seen the holy grail.

Forget the quote-unquote 'Top 50 Man Candy' list by OK Magazine! Instead, check out the FANDOM Top 50 Man Candy list by [livejournal.com profile] mortari.

Seriously, this is the fucking list of all the men I want to... meet in real life. Or something. Err.

All joking aside, this list really is the most awesome ever, and Alan Rickman (who got left off by accident) gets an honorable mention.

GO LOOK!
OH OH OH I wanted to make this post before I forgot.

I've mentioned a couple of times lately about my being an over-worrier about fandom issues? Like overstaying my welcome or bugging people too much, etc. etc.

I just wanted to state for the record that this does NOT mean that if I AM doing these things, you shouldn't say something. I know that sounds contradictory but I usually worry about stuff in odd contexts, like am I freaking people out by being the first person to see new fics and review them (which I've noticed lately...), or what the protocol is of holding conversations with other users in private journals (this isn't a today thing, though), etc. So like, when I'm insecure about it that's usually because I am overanalyzing my own behavior, and confirming it will NOT make it worse if I'm actually Doing It Wrong.

Which is my way of saying that worrying is worse. So it's not going to make or break me, no matter how emotional I've been lately, if I get told 'yeah you might want to back off a little' or 'you seem overeager with the comments' or something.

I wanted to get that out now because I have new friends on my f-list and have started to talk to folks on instant messenger and there's nothing worse than making this sort of post AFTER holding conversations in journals or e-mails or IM and making OTHER PEOPLE think I'm directing it at them.

So I'm not. I'm also not protesting too much, I swear. Lol. ILU GUYZ.

ETA: changed title to be more appropriate amusing
Real quick: Does anyone have the .pdf files of Twilight that are floating around? Certain people would prefer not to pay for the book and feed the frenzy, but would love to mock the hell out of it are genuinely curious.

I'm just their mouthpiece, you understand.

*nods*

Comments are screened, but I'll unscreen any general commentary comments. I just figure if anyone wanted to post the .pdfs anonymously I should be an enabler offer them... anonymity. Shut up, it made sense in my head!

This poll was posted on [livejournal.com profile] cupidsbow's journal and I've seen it on [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan's journal as well, and I think it's a really neat idea, and something I'd really like to know. The concept is that of seeing LJ usernames as a 'brand,' of sorts. Basically, we tended to expect certain types of stories from certain authors, and that expectation became part of the portmanteau of icon/name/fandom we associate with them.

So that made me curious--does [livejournal.com profile] darsynia have a brand? If so, what is it? I've added a twist to this to entice new f-listers to participate as well: for the genre and theme questions, I've added a 'what would you *like* to see' question. Please feel free to fill this out even if you've only read a few stories--I'm ravenously curious! Anonymous posting is on, screening is off.

When I think of Darsynia, I think of... )

WHAT.

I wish I had a Lorne icon. Woot! I have one now. Thanks for the rec, [livejournal.com profile] unamaga

[livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets:

I repeat. WHAT.

Discuss.

ETA: This comment makes me sad for that person. I fully expect to get flamed for my response, though, because I like McShep and therefore must be part of the raving hordes. Or something.

ETA2, Clever Relative to ETA (I'm lazy tonight): ILU, Leah! (Honorable mention to [livejournal.com profile] vida_boheme and [livejournal.com profile] falling_colors)
The entries are in the process of being un-locked over at [livejournal.com profile] remixredux08, and I strongly encourage everyone to head over and surf the tags for your favorite authors, fandoms, characters, and pairings! If the 'written by' names seem odd, it's because it's their procedure to have us all post under sockpuppet accounts until the reveal in a week's time.

It was an honor to participate for the first time this year, and I've already tracked down the story written 'for' me--it's a remix of my Lucius/Narcissa story For Love, called Love, Interrupted. It's absolutely fantastic, and I'm really excited about it! Here's hoping my remixee likes theirs as much as I like mine!

A little side nod to one of my all-time favorite stories, Shed Your Skin, by [livejournal.com profile] seperis--there's a remix, called Shed Your Skin (the Sledgehammer Remix) that I think is just awesome!

This is also a reminder to myself that I MUST LEAVE FEEDBACK for the stories I read here in [livejournal.com profile] remixredux08, because in a thread in [livejournal.com profile] cupidsbow's journal, a few of us were remarking on how remixes tend to get the short end of the feedback stick, due to quite a lot of differing factors. Writing is writing folks, and if you enjoy it, tell us! Even if you didn't give a comment on the original story (Pop on by and drop a 'this was really great, just wanted to de-lurk and let you know.' It really doesn't take long and folks appreciate it like woah. This is not a self-plug, btw. quit yer dirty thoughts... or fess up some fic instead! *winkies*), drop in a few words to let the author know you appreciate their work. One of the folks I was talking to earlier said she only got one comment last year--thank goodness it was from her remixer, but seriously, let's all work on the feedback thing.

Ok, soapbox over, sorries!

*runs off to make/obtain supper*
I just had a nightmare that I was stuck in a hallway with characters from Twilight. Now, I've never read the books or anything, all I know of the series came from friends posts and [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets, and the last thing I can remember saying before I woke up was trying to explain to someone as I ran away screaming, "You don't understand, this book has *sparkly vampires*! It's SPECIFICALLY MENTIONED!

It's not even that I think I won't like it, it's that I managed to osmosis my way into disliking it in my dream life... LOL.

NO.

Thanks to an anonymouse who thought I should know:

Dear Kirgrl18,

THIS IS NOT YOUR STORY. Know how I know? BECAUSE IT IS MY STORY. You're even stupid enough to copy it word for word, with the SAME TITLE, same chapter titles, and even my disclaimer:
Finally, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, these characters are NOT mine. I love them dearly, and I send them on grand adventures when I can, but in the end, I'm not profiting from these stories in any way other than emotional and creative gratification. However-the story itself, the original supporting characters therein, and the plot…those ARE mine. If you want to archive this story somewhere, that's fine, but please send me a message (you can even leave it in a review of a chapter) so that I know where it is. Thank you!

Please note that 'if you'd like to archive my story' doesn't mean 'if you'd like to pass it off as yours.' I particularly have to laugh at your 'author's note' at the end of the second chapter:

Well Theres chapter 1 sorry for such a long one thats how most of them will be I hope thats ok if not I will try to shorten them!! Thanks for reading!!

Yeah, really a long chapter for someone who DIDN'T WRITE A WORD OF IT.

No love,
The author who doesn't agree with 'imitation is the sincerest form of flattery' in this instance.

ps. Going to report them to [livejournal.com profile] stop_plagiarism even though ff.net already had the story flagged before I'd gotten there, because I'm pretty sure I recognize the title of at least one of the other stories she's got in her profile.

Edit: LOL@ her 'I'm working on 4 stories at once!!! That should make me busy for spring break!!!' on her profile, as well as her 'picture of Mia.' Looks like if she does decide to 'shorten' the chapters, poor Hermione will get a makeover. *shakes head*

ETA: BOOM, it's gone already. Score one for ff.net. I can post screenies if you like.

ETA2: Screenies. Though, ironically, OF COURSE my browser crashed after only taking two, and the link is gone. It's enough, though, imo.
Original Chapter 1 (note the chapter title and url)
Plagiarized Chapter 1 (note the chapter title is different, as is the author, published date, and URL)
Original ending to Chapter 2 (note the chapter title and URL)
Plagiarized ending to Chapter 2 (note the inconsistencies in the chapter title and URL, and how the 'author's note' is completely different than the style of writing in the rest of the piece)
Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] lantean_drift. Why 'to cheer me up?' Let's just say expectations and results for something I did recently were wildly disparate.

Pick a fandom that you know I at least know about, and I'll tell you:

1. The first character I first fell in love with

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now

3. The character everyone else loves that I don't

4. The character I love that everyone else hates

5. The character I used to love but don't any longer

6. The character I would shag anytime

7. The character I'd want to be like

8. The character I'd slap

9. A pairing that I love

10. A pairing that I despise
Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] caz963, who points out that this list was most definitely put together by very nerdy young men.

Italics if you've seen at least one episode, bold if you've seen every episode.

Oh, man, my Sci Fi credentials are SOO gonna get taken offa me )
I'm... writing my first slash sex scene -!

I think it's good... so far... Hopefully it'll be done (it's a one-shot, Doppelganger tag) by this evening.

Just felt like sharing...

Oh, dear. It seems that as of yesterday, no one can create basic (basic = no cost + ad free) LJ accounts anymore.

As reported on fandom_wank, Brad Kirkpatrick, the VP of Product Development for LJ is Not Happy about this...

I hadn't actually ever spent much time on LJ without having been logged in, so I wasn't sure what ads even looked like on plus accounts (yeah, I know, I've lived a sheltered LJ life), but if anyone's curious, [livejournal.com profile] i_celebrate_me was on the front page, and is a plus account. I seriously do NOT endorse the userpic and didn't even bother to look at the recent post, I was just curious as to what a plus account's ads might look like.

ETA: Communities can apparently still be created basic, which pretty much removes about all of the 'give a shit' from my post on this subject. No offense to anyone with a basic journal account, or anything.

Also, the more I think about it, the more I agree with the assessment I'd posted on another thread about this--there's not much they probably could have done that wouldn't have set off a 'MAKE RANDOM NAMES NOW THERE'S RENAME TOKENS IF WE EVER NEED THEM FOR ANYTHING' chain reaction...
(Yes, I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] remix_redux this year...)

Dear ReMixer,

Firstly, sorry to have waited this long to write this--I got a little caught up in things and, being new to the scene, didn't realize I was even allowed to!

Secondly--I have to admit, the majority of my stories aren't very plotty, and thus might make dubious candidates for remixing--I don't know, as I am a newbie to this. I will say that I'm very excited about this and as you might have noticed, have no 'safe' stories or anything--go wild! I wish I'd been able to finish more of the John/Rodney stories that are waiting on my hard drive, as that would offer more of a selection (and hey, I'm planning to get the second part of How Many Astrophysicists... up soon, so if you liked it but saw that it's a WiP and off-limits, I say go for it anyway--or check back in a couple of days!).

My main concern is just that I have so many rare pairings, but hopefully that won't present a problem. I'm actually totally into slash now that I've gotten sucked into the Stargate fandom, not that you can tell by my HP stories, lol!

Note: There are a few stories that aren't posted on my LJ that are actually complete and eligible, you can find them at my Fanfiction.net page (I'm 'Ssergit') there (or, alternatively, my (ye gods!) FanLib page).

Have fun!
~Darsy

ps. As for my own assignment... oh MAN am I happy--I love this person's writing, and am stuffed full of ideas! Hard to pick one!
Dear Fanfiction.net,

Thank you so much for making it impossible to edit submissions via html. Your added bonus of completely breaking your code for Safari browser was a particularly wonderful touch. The fact that it took an hour to figure out exactly how you screwed up this time made me feel splendid.

Your loving servant,
Darsy
