Thank you very much! I'm so pleased that you chose to read it even without being familiar with the fandom :) I'll ease your mind on that score--a lot of us (myself included) started out with SGA by reading the fic before we watched the show, and, surprisingly, it kind of works!
The deal with these two characters in canon is that the actors themselves have amazing chemistry with each other (meant neutrally, or as both platonic and romantic, depending on your choice of glasses/tinhat), and their friendship is one of the cornerstones of the show. As John is an Air Force Colonel, I doubt they'll ever go there (the writers), but they have tons of scenes together and the subtext is fabulous.
It made all kinds of sense, and I really am honored by and very interested in your comments about this! It's neat to get to hear a take on something that's not of the 'norm' due to unfamiliarity. What you're telling me is that this worked even without knowing the base canon, and that's a really great compliment to give, thanks so much!
