Read this post on friendshipper's journal about closed-canon fandom, guys. It made me feel better, especially this bit:

There's a mellowness to closed-canon fanning that's kind of nice. As wonderful as it is to get new canon every week, it's an emotional roller coaster ride as canon changes, stories get jossed, ships run aground and fans freak out over new developments. Once the show's over, we can still write our happily-ever-afters, explore the Pegasus galaxy, and make up detailed life histories for every character -- without any worries of being contradicted by canon or having our favorite characters die.

I can't help but agree, you guys. Since we know there will be movies, as there were with SG-1, and SG-1's films have such an open-ended quality to them, we have a REAL hope of there being that chance for us, too. If this had aired on ABC? We'd know half our beloved characters were going to die in the finale. Also remember that after the finale of season four, they admitted that they'd written The Last Man as it was, and had prepared to air it as-is whether or not they were renewed.

This gives us a high probability that while yes, there will likely be a cliffhanger, the likelihood that they'll drastically alter their plans for the end of season five due to this new information is *highly* unlikely. Now granted, we don't know what those plans are, and we might not like some of the aspects of them. But writing an episode with the intent of coming up with good, solid episodes that will hopefully help carry the series into a new season is very, very different than writing an episode with an eye toward the end of the series.

I expect to lose the folks who aren't comfortable with/can't feel creative with/don't like participating in a fandom without new canon. I feel like I'm losing family members, and hell, sure, that's kind of stupid maybe, but it is what it is, and you get close to people even if you only think of them fondly by username and default icon. I guess I just want to encourage some folks to stay, those of you who don't have trouble with a closed-canon concept to... stick it out and see what happens before running away, worried that there'll be a bare cupboard mentality and that that will be more depressing than getting out early. In any event, we've got 15 more episodes and a movie to look forward to. I'd be more heartbroken than I am now to think that anyone would be willing to jump the train before it even reaches the end of the line, for fear that coming to a stop would be even more painful.
