So, I spent three days not on LJ at ALL because I started college this week, and this happens! I'm sure the multitude of people who have already posted about this have covered all of the things I'm feeling right now (with the possible exception of wanting to just... non-creepily cuddle David Hewlett because his dear twitter posts about loving his job make me so very sad in this context).
I... I wish they'd waited till after the break, or at least after the episode tomorrow. Five aired episodes is NOT enough, in my estimation, to determine whether or not a show is deserving of being renewed! To be completely honest, David's episodes strike me as some of the most popular throughout the demographics, and the fact that they didn't wait until an episode centered on him airs tells me there's not much we can do as fans to prevent this--not that we won't TRY, of course. It just seems like a decision that's less based on audience and more on other factors.
Oh, and I think the single-most pressing concern for all of us right now besides the immediate 'oh show' is losing friends from fandom. I don't plan on going anywhere.

Date: 2008-08-21 12:20 pm (UTC)This is the third show of mine they've canceled, and I can't even find any decent reruns of anything when I look at tvguide, so I'm glad I didn't call for cable like I'd planned. No Atlantis, no me. I'll wait until some dummie prereleases the Atlantis movies and get them off the net. *sticks tongue out at SciFi and NBC*
Guanomunchers.
Post redone for two window Sydrome. For the record, Showtime canceled Poltergeist the Legacy and StarGate SG-1 before Sci-Fi did, but Showtime's got Dexter, so I've forgiven them.

My thoughts exactly. I got the idea that the S5 ratings were pretty good so far - the 'other factors' may include the money they made from the SG-1 movies, which was, at least that's the impression I got, a lot more than they expected. I hope we'll get some clarification on this.
*hugs*
Date: 2008-08-21 12:40 pm (UTC)i still dont understand the decision though, why would they do this esp since the ratings have been much better this season. and i'm sorry but who is writing the movie? mallozzi's eps are always the worst ones, could we not have someone who actually enjoys all the characters, like say marty g who has written some of my fav episodes of the series. or carl binder whose stories are always intricate and interesting? serisously?!
i worry that we are not going to get much more in terms of future movies, anyway, because honestly i think the Flan might find different things to do. he never seemed so much into it as everyone else... i really hate this, damn you scifi! D: D:

Date: 2008-08-21 12:47 pm (UTC)Still, SG1 fandom is going strong, 3 years (?) after their cancellation.

Date: 2008-08-21 04:07 pm (UTC)I agree with you on longevity; also something to consider is the fandom's tendency to write based on ANY time period in the show, not just the last events as seen on screen. I think that will stand us in good stead when we have to wait months and then never for new material.

I suspect, and don't have much to back it up, that this was less about scifi wanting to remove the show (although yes, part of it) and more about the stargate world's almost indifference to the show. Atlantis has always been the redheaded stepchild, the odd man out compared to SG-1, and I suspect that scifi basically made the decision to have one sg show on air, not two, which meant Atlantis was the one to go. Not just because it's the older one, and honestly had a better-than-decent run. But because the SG universe wants the new show, all the people involved, and well.
But I really don't think this has a lot to do with numbers at all. Just no proof.
Fuck :(

YES. I'm actually about to eat lunch but I HAD to respond with a resounding YES YES YES to this asap.
I also agree sadly with your assessment--one of the producers (Maybe JM?) pointed out that they're not set up to do two shows anymore, and if they're going to do SGW as a tv show, it, cryptically, 'would be very difficult to revert back to the 40 episode per year model.' I think that's as close as we'll get to proof for a while.
I just have one thing to say to that. WHAT WHY UGH would you choose to cancel a show with a pre-existing fanbase in order to introduce a NEW show in the same universe? DOES NOT COMPUTE.
I just want three things not to happen:
1) Please don't kill anyone off
--I don't see this as a huge worry now that I've had more perspective and remembered about SGW, because they'll possibly still want cameos. But still. The 'emotional resonance' with the audience is SUFFICIENT via cancellation, we don't need to wring out more sympathy.
2) Happy ending =/= everyone in the Milky Way
--Oh, for the LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY IN ANY RELIGION please don't send everyone home and destroy Atlantis for a 'wrap up' piece of shit ugh no just no no no. Incoherent begging commences.
3) This isn't SG-1's swan song, it's SGA's. Please don't bring characters over just to 'finalize' their Stargate experience
Again, less of a worry as on the ride home now that I remember about SGW, but seriously, I'm a bit worried about this, especially as you said that SGA has been the relative, not the cherished family member. I want it to be OUR guys, not 'lets cram everyone we can in to say goodbye.' That goes for the movies, too.

Date: 2008-08-21 04:05 pm (UTC)Everything you said, exactly as you said it. Let's keep what we have going no matter what.
You know, I would have to say our fandom has a really good, solid chance at not disintegrating as much as others have simply because, we are ALREADY writing things in all time periods of the show. We've never felt constrained to write where the last episode left off, and that will matter quite a bit, I think.
Love the icon, also.

(In my storytelling dreams, I imagine how groundbreaking - well, in terms of American scifi - it would have been to have a male soldier fall in love with a male scientist.)

Date: 2008-08-21 04:14 pm (UTC)EXACTLY. THAT. THAT'S been on my mind since the worrying pronouncement of 'it would be difficult to go back to producing 40 a year instead of 20.'
Also, how selfish am I that I just keep thinking, 'I'll never get to visit the set...'
I really want to go punch my economy right now; the disparity between the US and Canadian dollar might just have been the catalyst that tipped them over the edge on this. Yet, I kind of hope it WAS, and not the SGW thing, because FUCK World, FUCK their game, I'm not buying EITHER of them if this is the way they treat loyal fans. SUCK IT UP FOR A YEAR, produce a year of both, THEN phase SGA out. They're just losing loyalty and viewers this way, and it doesn't seem like they even care.
Worse comes to worst? JUST WRITE EPISODES WITH FEWER SPECIAL EFFECTS. Break the Star Drive, cut them off from Earth, revert to a less technological time period, SOMETHING...
edited for pronoun misuse!
